THE GREAT ESCAPE

Mondays are never dull these days, and tonight was no exception.

I'm making dinner, and the dogs are outside being especially quiet and what appeared to be well-behaved. In other words, they weren't trying to scrape their way through the metal storm door like they usually do after they've been outside longer than they care to be. Pat was downstairs in the basement (hopefully bat-hunting) and comes up and says, "Hey... how come the dogs are so quiet?" He goes outside, and sees that the back gate is ajar. Uh huh, the dogs are being quiet because they are GONE. Pat calls Benny's name and thankfully he was just outside the gate, probably thinking to himself, "Man... I know I shouldn't be out here. I had better stay close by so I don't get into trouble." But Mona is nowhere to be found. "Mona... Mohhhh-naaaaaa.... MONA, COME!!!!" Mona comes running down the sidewalk at a full gallop, about a block way. Talk about TERRIFYING. Mona's thoughts after seeing the gate open: "What's this??!! I'm outta here..... let's parrrrr-tay!!!" The gate was left open (not open, but rather, not locked with the little caribiner thing we use to keep it closed.) One of the two monkeys proved just smart enough to get it open and begin their Lewis and Clark dogsploration. Naughty dogs! That was scary, but oh so thankfully they are home safe and sound now.

Somehow, the dogs' escape inspired us to take them for a walk. A couple of wool accessories, and we were off. Mona got her usual "beautiful dog" compliment from a passer-by. She always gets compliments. Poor Bennamin never gets a second look. I guess that's because an old tube sock that looks like it's been over-stuffed with marbles and newspaper just isn't all that attractive. Poor guy. Maybe if we stick with walking every day like we used to in the old days...
